About us

The Swinburne University of Technology (often simply called Swinburne) is an Australian public university based in Melbourne, Victoria. It was founded in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College by George Swinburne in order to serve those without access to further education in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Its main campus is located in Hawthorn, a suburb of Melbourne which is located 7.5 km from the Melbourne central business district.

General admission requirements

Applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements for a course may be selected for a course at Swinburne. However, meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee selection.

Applicants may be offered a place once Swinburne has assessed:

  • your formal academic qualifications and results
  • whether you meet any course prerequisites
  • your English language proficiency
  • whether you meet any legal or administrative requirements (see below)
  • the availability of student places and learning resources.

 

Minimum age requirement

Students must be at least 17 years old at time of course commencement to be eligible for entry into any Higher Education course. Swinburne may consider exceptions in some circumstances and will take into account the student’s academic record and availability of appropriate support.

Access to the internet

Online learning resources and materials are integral to teaching and learning activities and assessment tasks for Swinburne courses. All online students must have regular access to an internet-connected computer, which is capable of communicating with Swinburne’s online systems.

 

English language proficiency

All students at Swinburne are expected to be proficient in written and spoken English. Each Swinburne course has a minimum English language requirements. 

You can satisfy the English language entry requirements in a number of ways depending on your education and experience. These requirements must be met in addition to academic entry requirements.
